The Russian ship Demeter arrives at Whitby during a storm. All crew are dead; a large dog leaps ashore — Dracula in animal form.

Lucy begins sleepwalking and is found at the churchyard with marks on her neck. Her health deteriorates despite blood transfusions.

Professor Abraham Van Helsing is called to examine Lucy. He recognizes the vampire marks and attempts to protect her with garlic.

Despite their efforts, Lucy dies and rises as a vampire — the "Bloofer Lady" who preys on children in Hampstead Heath.
